THE BODY of a man recovered from the sea in Co Clare on Saturday evening is believed to be that of a German tourist whose rental car was found abandoned on Thursday near the Cliffs of Moher.

It is thought the body drifted up to 40 kilometres from where the 44-year-old man’s vehicle was discovered on a country road at Derreen just south of Moher on Thursday night. The body had been in the water for a number of days.

The grim discovery was made on Saturday evening when two woman spotted the body floating in the sea at Intrinsic Bay a short distance from Kilkee.

The women alerted gardaí to the discovery at around 7pm. Members of the Kilkee Marine Rescue Service went to the scene and recovered the body a short time later.
