Boeing has won a coveted multi-billion dollar deal to build the US Navy's next generation of submarine-hunting aircraft.
The contract, which is worth $4 billion, means it has beaten off competition from rival Lockheed Martin. The Pentagon chose Boeing's prposal to build a modified version of its 737 commercial airliner.
Lockheed had put forward the idea of upgrading its existing P-3 Orion planes.
The new long distance surveillance jets are known as Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft, or MMAs.
US defence chiefs hope to save cash in the long-term by using a plane based on the widely used civilian aircraft.
Boeing will initially provide a handful of planes for tests but the fleet could eventually expand to more than 100. The contract will create about 1,600 jobs within Boeing, mainly at the company's plant in Seattle.
