A last minute equaliser from Paul McNally salvaged a point for Bohemians at Dalymount Park tonight as Cork threatened to steal their top spot. Having gone a goal down in the first half Bohs fought their way back in to a pulsating game in which contributed to some fabulous entertainment.
The visitors announced themselves by immediately going at Bohemians. Their efforts were rewarded when the leagues top scorer John O’Flynn, recently signed from Port Vale, rounded the keeper and calmly finished after 34 minutes.
O’Flynn went close again when he grazed the top of the bar with a long range effort in the second half.
Bohemians didn’t roll over however and if it wasn’t for two quality Michael Devine saves from Derek Caulin and Glen Crowe. Bohs went close again early in the second half when Stephen Caffrey spurned a chance that seemed easier to finish.
A hard fought contest was seen at the Carlisle grounds where Bray Wanderers weathered a late rally from Drogheda Utd to take a deserved three points.
Having gone three nil up the homeside then surrendered two goals in the last few minutes after Declan O’Brien scrambled his first into the net and two minutes later finished from the spot after being taken down in the box.
Barry O’Connor opened the scoring when he ran onto a perfectly weighted Jason Byrne header after only seven minutes and blazed through the middle to confidently put it past Gary Rogers.
Supplier turned goalscorer on the 67th when Byrne doubled the lead and put the game out of the visitors’ reach. Byrne added his second and Bray’s third when he latched onto Ciaran O’Brien’s pass to loop it into the net.
In the eircom League First Division Athlone Town lost three nil in their own back yard to Galway United courtesy of goals from Mark Herrick, John Brennan and Barry Moran
