Bolton midfielder Stig Tofting, convicted of assault yesterday, will not play for the club until any appeal against his four-month prison sentence has been heard.
The Denmark player was sentenced to a jail term after being found guilty of assault at a Copenhagen restaurant during a night out with fellow international players following the squad's return from the World Cup.
He has not started the sentence immediately and is considering an appeal following his return to England.
However, his club have effectively suspended him from playing until his future is decided and he will be fined the maximum two weeks' wages.
"The club wishes to make it clear that in no way does it condone the actions of Stig Tofting or any employee whose behaviour, whether it be whilst on business or outside working hours, is of the nature that Stig Tofting was convicted for yesterday," said a Bolton statement.
"Bolton have supported Mr Tofting prior to yesterday's conviction and in light of the pending appeal will now be reviewing their position.
"Disciplinary action will be taken by the football club which will be appropriate for the severity of this case.
"The club has no precedent for disciplinary action of this nature and will take the necessary amount of time needed to make its decision.
"Until the appeal action is resolved, in the next two weeks, Mr Tofting will not take part in any Premiership matches," said the statement on the club's website, www.bwfc.co.uk.
The 33-year-old, who joined Bolton in February from German club Hamburg for £250,000, has been in trouble with the law before and avoided jail three years ago when he was given a 20-day suspended sentence following an incident at a restaurant in Aarhus.
