Army bomb disposal teams were called out 90 times during this year, with 19 of the alerts being in the Border region. In the Dublin region the Army closed the M1 motorway twice as old shells were dealt with.

In a review of the year's activities, the Defence Forces said that 2,282 cash escorts took place within the State, as did 691 escorts of explosive substances. A total of 157 special prisoner escorts were facilitated, as were 1,029 visits to commercial blasting sites.

The Army carried out 263 random patrols of airports, 35 of major dockyard areas, 37 of the law courts, 263 of RTE installations and 216 of ESB installations.

The Air Corps conducted 51 Border flights, 18 special flights in conjunction with the Garda and 222 cash escort surveillance flights. The Naval Service monitored 2,178 fishing vessels and boarded 1,382 of them.
