A bomb exploded along the route of a
packed passenger train south of Tel Aviv today, slightly injuring two passengers, in an apparent Palestinian attack, Israeli police said.
The blast occurred around two kilometers north of Lod station, shattering the windows of one carriage and causing a halt in rail traffic, Superintendant Gil Kleiman told AFP.
A third passenger was suffering from shock, he said.
"At this stage of the inquiry, everything leads us to believe that this was a Palestinian attack," Mr Kleiman said.
The train was carrying around 500 passengers from the town of Beersheba to Tel Aviv, local police official Haim Cohen told public radio. Several windows in one of the carriages were damaged.
The five-kilo explosive charge packed with scraps of metal detonated at around 7 a.m. (5 a.m. Irish time), shortly after the train left Lod station bound for Tel Aviv, 10 kilometres to the northwest.
A Palestinian suspect in the area was detained for questioning, Mr Cohen said.
