Bono has announced his support for the Make Poverty History - Irish Campaign as the stage goes up in Croke Park for U2’s sell-out concerts this weekend.

In the past week, during shows in England and Scotland, Bono has called on fans from the stage to join the Make Poverty History campaign by texting.

He will appeal to Irish concert-goers to text their support to the campaign. They will be able to do so by texting "Africa" with their name to 53121. The number will also be shown on the screen during the gigs, and texters will receive a reply from Bono encouraging them to attend the Dublin rally on 30th June.

Co-ordinator of the rally Eamon Stack, told ireland.com: "We are hugely grateful to the support Bono has given to make Poverty History.

"The Irish Government have reneged on their promise to give 0.7 per cent of our GNP to the poorest people in the world. . . . This is an excellent opportunity for Irish people to pressurise the Government to put forward a credible definite plan for overseas aid and be part of a generation who can make a change."

The texting initiative has seen over 800,000 people signing up since April 2005 to build pressure for change in Africa.
