An action by a Co Louth bookmaker who claimed he was forced to close his business after a UK company cut off his access to its live broadcasting of horse racing and other sports has been settled in the High Court.

No details of the settlement were given and the action was struck out with no order.

The case by Mr Sean Lawless against Satellite Information Services Ltd (SIS) opened yesterday morning and was due to run for two weeks.

At 4 p.m. yesterday, Mr Justice Ó Caoimh was told the matter was settled.

Mr Lawless (59), who until November 1994 had a bookmaking business at Park Street, Dundalk, claimed the FACTS (Full Audio and Captions Televised Service) service was cut off by SIS in 1994 after he objected to paying for afternoon greyhound racing service also screened on the SIS service.

Mr Michael Cush SC, for Mr Lawless, said the FACTS service is essential to bookmakers and only SIS provides such a service.

SIS denied any breach of contract and or that it has a dominant market position.
