John Boorman, the award-winning film director, has denied media reports that he is planning to make a film about the Bishop Eamonn Casey affair.
The English director, who lives in Co Wicklow, made the announcement on the eve of a live TV appearance by Dr Casey's former lover, Ms Annie Murphy, on RTE tonight.
Mr Boorman, who recently made the movie The General, about the Dublin criminal Martin Cahill, said he had read reports that he planned to produce a film about Dr Casey.
"Despite the fact that I have never expressed the least interest in this sad and sordid little episode, I am resigned to seeing it rehashed and reprinted over and over again," he wrote in a letter to The Irish Times.
Ms Murphy will appear tonight on Later With Clare McKeon on Network 2, a programme where guests, mainly women, are invited to discuss relationship issues.
Ms Murphy has been holidaying in Co Kerry for the past few days and is expected to fly home to Boston before the end of the week.
Her relationship with Dr Casey, and their parenting of a son, was made public seven years ago.
In his letter yesterday, Mr Boorman criticised sections of the Irish media which had failed to confirm whether he was planning such a film. He said the truth "would have spoiled the story", adding: "Once it is in print, other journalists feel free to run the piece with additional embellishments."
