Plans for a controversial mushroom compost plant near Kilkelly and Knock Airport, Co Mayo, have been approved by Bord Pleanala despite local concerns about "nasty odours".

Knock Airport was among the objectors on the grounds that prevailing winds might carry unacceptable smells to the terminal and concourse area.

However, the board said earlier this week that it was turning down an appeal by Mr Francis Henry and others of Knockbrack, Kilkelly, against Mayo County Council's decision on February 17th, 1999, to grant planning permission to the developer, Mr Cyril Gibbons.

Mr Gibbons had been granted permission by the county council to retain an existing development and the erection of a mushroom-compost manufacturing plant at Knockbrack and Shammerbaun townlands.
