Talks have begun between Shell E&P Ireland and An Bord Pleanála as the energy giant attempts to fast-track approval for its controversial gas pipeline in north Mayo.
Described as pre-application discussions, the company hopes the negotiations will speed up delivery of the Corrib gas project.
The talks are being held under the new Strategic Infrastructure Act, which gives An Bord Pleanála sole powers to grant or refuse planning permission for major infrastructure developments.
The legislation is designed to prevent lengthy legal challenges against such schemes.
