A Bosnian Serb indicted for war crimes has surrendered to authorities in the central Bosnian town of Zenica.

Tomo Mihajlovic, 46, was indicted by Bosnian authorities in 2000 for alleged war crimes against non-Serbs during the country's 1992-1995 war.

Mihajlovic, who was a police officer in a paramilitary unit during the war, is charged with murder, rape, expelling people from their homes and sending civilians to concentration camps.

The crimes allegedly took place in 1992 in and around the town of Teslic, 100 kilometres northwest of the capital, Sarajevo, Judge Mladen Veseljak says.

Mihajlovic maintains his innocence, Veseljak adds.

Mihajlovic has been sent to a jail in Zenica to await trial. He is due to appear before a Bosnian court on March 17.

It is not clear why he chose to surrender nearly three years after authorities first issued a warrant for his arrest, in August 2000.
