Often, alas, red Burgundy under £15 (and sometimes well above that) fails the taste test. It's either thin and tart or just pleasantly fruity in a Beujolais sort of way - making hundreds of people wonder what the fuss is about. But, at under £10, Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavieres, 1994 (Superquinn, £9.29) is a winning introduction. Already tasting quite mature, it's a lovely, supple, balanced wine with true Burgundy character. Pounce on the even more delicious 1995 when it arrives.
