Is it pure accident that three of this week's 10 spring newcomers are from the south of France? I don't think so. The glorious 1998 vintage has given further impetus to a region already on a roll. Abbotts Cirrus, Cabardes 1998 (Oddbins, £7.99) typifies a year outstanding for its succulent, fleshy reds. From another Aussie-led venture - this time in the southwest, near Carcassonne - this blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz has wonderful, berry fruit flavours and gentle spice wrapped in a velvet jacket. Best opened with friends; you won't want to recork it. I know.
