Canadian former world champion boxer Dave Hilton was sentenced to seven years in prison today for sexually abusing two young girls from 1995 to 1998.

Hilton denied the charges and accused the two sisters of trying to set him up. He claimed the discrepancies in his testimony were due to his alcohol problem.

The boxer, who has been in prison since being convicted of the charges in March, was stripped of his WBC super-middleweight title last week. He has appealed the decision.

Prosecutor Ms Helen Di Salvo called for a seven-year sentence, saying Hilton had shown no remorse and that his rehabilitation seemed impossible. The boxer faced a maximum 14-year punishment.

The WBC title, which he won last December, was Hilton's first in a 19-year pro career that was stalled several times by arrests, jail terms and indiscipline.
