Boxing: The Boxing Union of Ireland has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the result of last night's bout to decide the Irish lightweight Championship.

Betting was suspended by Boylesports after unusual patterns prior to Peter McDonagh stopping Michael Gomez in the fifth round after the latter had dominated the first four.

Though the referee said he stopped the fight, spectators and television viewers saw Gomez turn his back on his opponent and walk to his corner after a seemingly innocuous punch was followed by a flurry of inaccurate blows from McDonagh.

Boylesports had earlier dropped their odds on a McDonagh win from 125-1 to 25-1 after receiving an unusual number of bets for the outsider to win in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds.

After the fightt Gomez left the arena refusing to attend the presentation or post fight press conference.

The fight was on the under card of Bernard Dunne’s bout with former European and World Champion Noel Wilders, which the Dubliner won with a stinging body blow in the sixth round.

It was Dunne’s 19th straight professional win and lines him up for a shot at the European title later this year.
