Algiers - Anti-government unrest spreading through Algeria has claimed the life of a young boy, killed during looting in the eastern Algerian city of Annaba, residents and local media said yesterday.
The 13-year-old was crushed by a heavy metal table on Saturday as hundreds of protesters looted a domestic appliances shop in Annaba, a port city 600 km east of Algiers, near Tunisia, the daily El Watan said. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets, smashing windows of public buildings, ransacking shops and setting up barricades of burning tyres on main avenues.
Meanwhile, in Tizi Ouzou, 90 km east of Algiers, 12 people, including two policemen, were wounded in fierce street clashes, state radio reported.
