A 16-year-old boy is in hospital after he was injured in a shooting in Limerick last night.

The boy, whose wounds are not thought to be life-threatening, was shot in the Moyross area of the city shortly after midnight.

The shooting came only hours after gardaí arrested a man following an earlier shooting in which a man (34) was killed in an ambush on his motorbike.

A man was detained after a gun was found during the search of a house in Moyross.

Noel Campion (34), of Pineview Gardens, Moyross, was a pillion passenger on a motorbike in Thomondgate when he was shot at about 10.40am yesterday.

The killer stepped from a phone box as the bike approached, and the driver and Mr Campion realised they were being targeted. As the gunman opened fire with a handgun the driver crashed into a parked car as he tried to speed away.

Mr Campion and the driver tried to flee on foot, but their attacker continued to fire up to six shots, fatally wounding the victim in the back.
