Neighbours who smashed a window and pushed open the front door tried in vain to save the young family before they were overcome by dense smoke.

They were unconscious when rescued by firefighters and given CPR at the scene before being taken to Cork University Hospital, where Cian was pronounced dead.

Cork City Fire Brigade officer Edward Buckley  said the fire appeared to have been a "tragic accident". It broke out in the downstairs kitchen before spreading upstairs.

There was no evidence of foul play.
