A two-year-old boy was killed in a fire and his mother was in a critical condition last night after a house fire in Coolock, Dublin.
The boy was named last night as Jason Byrne, of Cromcastle Road.
Two other people, the woman's parents, were also hospitalised after the fire, which broke out in a bedroom at about 7.45 a.m. yesterday.
The alarm had been raised by neighbours who saw smoke coming from the windows of the house. Three units of Dublin Fire Brigade fought the blaze with the assistance of gardai from Santry station.
The child suffered serious burns and was taken to Beaumont Hospital, where he died. His mother was also taken to Beaumont Hospital but was later transferred to St James's Hospital.
The woman's parents, who had attempted to rescue her and her son, were treated for smoke inhalation.
Garda technical experts sealed off the scene yesterday for investigation. The cause of the fire had not yet been discovered last night.
