A youth was expelled after he was caught dealing drugs at a private, fee-paying school in Dublin, a court heard yesterday.

The 17-year-old was charged for possession of €190 worth of cannabis resin for sale or supply at his school, the Dublin Children's Court was told. He had acted as an "agent" for friends who had clubbed their money together and got him to buy the drug.

Judge Bridget Reilly was told that school authorities reported the boy to gardaí, who came to the school to arrest him. His family understood that the school had no other option, and theyalso disciplined the boy themselves.

When questioned, the boy was co-operative and also apologised to the court. Pleading for leniency, his solicitor, Mr Peter Mullen, said the boy had no previous convictions. The boy later managed to enrol at another school. Sentencing was deferred.
