A five-year-old boy was today fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in the head in a Fermanagh school playground.
The boy was shot at around 2.30 p.m. yesterday in the playground of Mullinaskea primary school in Enniskillen.
A spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland said detectives were still trying to establish the weapon used in the shooting.
"It could have been a pellet gun - but it could have been a less serious or more serious weapon," he said.
The boy was taken to Erne Hospital with serious head injuries. He was transferred to the Royal Hospital in Belfast, where he was in a critical condition.
Detectives today appealed for anyone who noticed any person or vehicle in the area and the roads around the school between 1pm and 3pm yesterday to come forward to the incident room at Enniskillen.
The school is situated on the main road between Enniskillen and Tempo.
The five year-old-boy was in his first year, known as primary one, at the Catholic school. He was named locally as Darren Summers and lived with his parents Gerald and Janine Summers, in a housing estate in Drumbeg, just outside Enniskillen.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the exact time of the shooting was 1.10pm yesterday. Officers are to meet today for a conference to discuss the direction of the investigation, including the need to carry out interviews with parents, teachers and pupils.
The local parish priest Fr Matthew Brady saw the police arrive from his house, which overlooks the school playground.
He said the community was shocked by what had happened.
"We have to hope now that the young boy will be all right. That's the main thing," he said.
