THE CATHOLIC primate of Ireland, Cardinal Seán Brady, has called for prayers for his predecessor Cardinal Cahal Daly who remains seriously ill in hospital.
Dr Daly, Ireland’s most senior cardinal, was taken to the specialist coronary care unit of Belfast City Hospital on Monday.
It is understood to be the second time in a month that he has needed hospital treatment.
“At this time I ask Catholics to pray for Cardinal Daly, that he may be given all the graces that he needs,” Cardinal Brady said yesterday.
“While this is a sad time for all, we should be heartened and nourished by Cardinal Daly’s motto which is Jesus Christ, yesterday and today (Hebrews 13:8).
“I know that throughout Ireland today people will be remembering Cardinal Daly in their prayers,” he said.
It was reported yesterday that Dr Daly (92) was conscious for a time on Monday night and that he remains seriously ill.
Dr Daly has served as bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise as well as Down and Connor before being appointed as Archbishop of Armagh and primate of all-Ireland.
He retired in 1996, but has continued to study and write since leaving Armagh.
Among his most recent works is The Minding of Planet Earthwhich was published in 2004.
