THE Minister for Education will move quickly to proposed changes in VEC appointment boards following the failure of management and unions to agree on the changes.
Last Friday was the deadline for the Irish Vocational Education Association and the Teachers' Union of Ireland to accept an arbitrator's proposals that a wider range of people should sit on EC appointment boards, seniority should be one of the criteria in making appointments, and there should be an independent appeals process.
The proposals have already been accepted in principle by Ms Breathnach. The main obstacle to agreement is known to be seniority, which the IVEA opposes as a major criterion in making VEC appointments, but which the TUI favours.
