Gary Breen's role in the Republic of Ireland's crucial World Cup showdown with Iran this Thursday is in doubt after the defender aggravated an old ankle injury in training this morning.

With Steve Staunton sitting out today's training session in order to nurse a sore back, Ireland manager Mick McCarthy must ponder the possibility of having to plan for Thursday's second leg with a different central defensive partnership than that which started the first.

Kenny Cunningham and Richard Dunne would be the likely deputees, although Newcastle's Andy O'Brien would also be a contender for a starting slot.

Niall Quinn, also suffering from a back injury, was the only other Irish player not to take part in today's session.
