Twenty drivers in the State are now within two penalty points of being disqualified, said the Minister for Transport, Mr Brennan, today.
He said the fact that almost 130,000 drivers now have penalty points should act as a warning for those driving this Easter weekend.
"I would urge all those who use our roads to exercise caution, particularly over the Bank Holiday weekend when thousands of extra car journeys will be made. Those who persist in reckless driving behaviour will be automatically disqualified", he said.
Mr Brennan reminded drivers to slow down, observe speed limits, wear a seat belt "and never drink and drive".
The Minister also confirmed that almost 1,000 drivers have accumulated 6 penalty points or more and 6,000 drivers have been penalised for the non-wearing of a seat-belt.
According to data released by the Department of transport today, more than 95 per cent of all penalty points issued up to April 6th, relate to speeding offences.
