British police this morning shot dead a man who had been driving a van the wrong way down a busy road.

British police this morning shot dead a man who had been driving a van the wrong way down a busy road.

Police were called to the A63 west of Welton, near Hull, at 6.20am following reports that the vehicle was driving down the eastbound carriageway in the wrong direction.

Humberside Police said armed-response officers were sent to the scene and following "an incident" the man was shot with baton rounds and then a firearm. He was pronounced dead at 7.30am.

Police refused to confirm reports the man had been armed and confronted officers.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has begun an investigation into the shooting as investigators attempted to establish whether the man was armed with a sword.
