The British army bomb disposal team this afternoon defused a booby-trap bomb found at the rear of an RUC station in Co Derry.
The device was found yesterday at the rear of the station in Claudy and was examined by army technical officers who resumed the investigation this morning. They called off their examination last night becasue of the dangers of working in poor light.
Houses in two streets near the police station were evacuated and a local hall was opened for residents to stay in overnight. The RUC say the occupants will be allowed to return to their homes soon and that the area is returning to normal.
British army technical officers made the bomb safe in a "sensitive and highly dangerous operation" shortly before 4 p.m. this afternoon. They described the device as "substantial" but no further details are available at this time.
No-one has claimed responsibility for planting the device though the police received several anonymous telephone calls claiming the bomb had been left near the station.
