British discus thrower Perriss Wilkins has been banned for life from competition following a second doping offence committed in April 2002. Wilkins was initially given a two-year ban in July 2002 after also testing positive in May.
The case, including the April test results - which had not been dealt with - was then sent to an independent disciplinary committee for a final verdict. UK Athletics said that the committee would release detailed findings on the case, which involved "the administration of testosterone" in the next few weeks.
A UK Athletics statement read: "Following a disciplinary hearing held on February 11 the independent disciplinary committee decided that Perriss Wilkins committed a doping offence in respect of a positive sample provided on April 28 2002 resulting from administration of testosterone (a prohibited substance).
"In accordance with UK Athletics' doping rules, and given that this is the second doping offence committed by Perriss Wilkins, he is therefore now ineligible to take part in athletics events within the UK and abroad for life.
"UK Athletics understands that the Disciplinary Committee will release its detailed written findings in the next few weeks. UK Athletics anticipates that the committee will be critical of the conduct of Perriss Wilkins."
