Police in Britain have interrogated a gatecrasher called the "comedy terrorist" who gatecrashed a 21st birthday party for Prince William at Windsor Castle.

Wearing a false beard, turban and pink dress, Mr Aaron Barschak (36) shocked guests at the fancy dress bash when he jumped on stage and took the microphone as William was about to speak, media and his father said.

Mr Barschak, who has dressed up as al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden for past stunts and recently stunned London's mayor by grabbing the microphone out of his hand at a rally, is a stand-up comic who calls himself "the comedy terrorist."

"It was maybe a step too far, but there was no malevolence," his father Mr Fred Barschak told reporters. "Of course there are security issues, but he did it for a laugh, not political purposes. He wanted to publicise his show".

"We consider any breach of security to be a serious matter," London's Scotland Yard police said in a statement promising an investigation into the embarrassing security lapse.

The British Home Office, which is responsible for domestic security, also ordered an "immediate report" into how Mr Barschak made it into the closely guarded castle for the latest in a growing history of lapses in royal security.

Prince William had invited 300 people including his grandmother, the Queen, and father Charles for the "Out of Africa" theme party.

Last year, an Italian man entered Prince Charles's St. James's Palace before being discovered asleep by a cleaner.

A man also scaled a Buckingham Palace drainpipe in 1982 to enter the Queen's bedroom, chatting with her for several minutes while she secretly alerted police.
