A British soldier was killed in southern Iraq when his patrol came under fire today, the Ministry of Defence said in London.

The soldier, from the 1st Battlion The Highlanders, died of injuries sustained in Maysan province, the ministry said in a statement.

No other troops were hurt or killed in the attack, the ministry said, declining to give further details of the incident.

The death brings to 99 the number of British troops who have died serving on the Iraq operation since the US-led invasion in 2003, including 76 killed in action.
