The first person to be charged using the new European arrest warrant today agreed to be extradited back to the Republic of Ireland.
Mr Lawrence Andrew McMillan (52), a Briton of no fixed abode, appeared at London's Bow Street Magistrates Court on three theft charges.
He could be extradited within days after agreeing to be returned under the fast-track rules introduced on January 1st.
Mr McMillan is charged with stealing a yacht from Crosshaven Boatyard, Co Cork, last October.
He is also alleged to have stolen two Rolex watches from a jeweller's in Killarney, County Kerry, and another Rolex watch from a Galway City jeweller, both in July.
The warrant replaces national extradition deals between EU member states.
It cuts the extradition time limits from 18 months to three months for people charged with criminal offences who are trying to shelter in another EU state.
Eight EU member states, including Ireland, Britain Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, have implemented the warrant.
The remaining EU states will join by the end of March, followed by the new East European members a month later.
