Ireland's abortion laws, the decriminalisation of homosexuality and the redistribution of wealth were among the issues raised by the broadcaster, Mr Vincent Browne, during his controversial 45minute interview with Dana, Mrs Rosemary Scallon, on last Thursday's RTE radio show.

On a number of occasions, Mr Browne accused the presidential candidate of being deliberately evasive after repeated questioning.

For up to 10 minutes, Dana was quizzed on whether, if elected, she would sign into law a piece of legislation outlining the circumstances in which abortion was legal.

Mr Browne also asked her to justify her claim that Ireland's law on abortion is one of the most liberal in Europe.

She asked why she had been "continually pilloried on this particular issue when I have continually said that I am not a one issue candidate. None of the other candidates have been pilloried in this way. In fact two of them have chosen to say they will not be pigeonholed and they have no view . . ."

On a number of topics, the same question was asked at least four or five times, such as whether Dana supported the redistribution of wealth.

A typical exchange follows:

D: ". . . I think people have a right to own what they earn but if a country as we are has suddenly moved up to number eight in the top 10 (most) wealthy countries in the world it's not too much to ask that there should be a feeling that those who are poorer or are getting poorer . . ."

VB: "But if people have the right to own then how can you say that you're in favour of the State redistributing their wealth? . . ."

D: "No, I'm talking about the Government ensuring that it lifts all levels of society."

VB: "Yes, but the Government must do so by redistributing wealth that is earned.

D: "Well then there's no problem."

VB (long pause): "What do you mean?"

D: "Well, what I'm saying is fine then isn't it. We're just saying the same thing aren't we."

VB: "I don't know" (sigh).

Dana was also questioned on her views on refugees, the payments to politicians controversy, and voting rights for emigrants and citizens of Northern Ireland.
