A replica Ferrari created for classic teen movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off has been auctioned in London for nearly £80,000 (€90,000) - double its original estimate.

The glamorous red car was made for the hit 1986 flick starring Matthew Broderick as a youngster who decides to bunk off school and have a day of fun.

The car, which was tipped to fetch £30,000 (€34,000) to £40,000 (€45,000), is described as “ready to drive”. But it clocked up an impressive £79,600, including buyer’s premium, after revving up big interest.

It was sold at Bonhams Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia auction at the RAF Museum in Hendon, north London.

The comedy movie follows Ferris and his pals as they borrow the replica Ferrari 250GT Spyder California from one of their fathers. The film grossed more than $70 million in the United States.

Existing examples of the car are “very rare and expensive” so Paramount chose to commission and build a replica for filming purposes,  Bonhams said.

Only around 100 genuine 250GT Spyder Californias were created by Ferrari between 1958 and 1963.
