Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton has been appointed as Labour Party director of elections for the stability treaty referendum campaign. The announcement was made yesterday by Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore.

Mr Gilmore said appointing somebody of Ms Burton’s stature and experience as director of election was a clear indication as to how seriously the Labour Party was taking the referendum.

Ms Burton said the stability treaty was a critical element in ensuring the long-term recovery of the Irish economy.

“I will be ensuring that the Labour Party pulls out all the stops in making sure that the referendum is passed.”
