Bujumbura - The Burundi army said yesterday it killed around 100 rebels in an operation south of the capital in which its only casualties were two wounded soldiers.

Speaking on state radio, Burundi army spokesman Lieut ColIsaie Nibizi said troops killed the Hutu rebels on Saturday in Mudende zone, about 60 km south of Bujumbura.

"In the course of this operation, we have destroyed about 100 terrorists," Lt Col Nibizi said. He said heavy weapons including cannon, 82mm mortar as well as small arms and ammunition were recovered in the operation.
