Up to 45 people are feared to have died after a bus skidded off a mountainous road in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and plunged into a river.

The bus plunged 120 metres into the Chenab Rover near Atholi, east of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir state. The bus was on its way to Jammu.

"Thirty-eight people were booked on the bus initially and more boarded later," a spokesman for the Jammu and Kashmir state government said.

Police, who said they were struggling to locate bodies, could only confirm that two people had died and three were injured.
