US President George W Bush has announced a series of multi-million pound studies and initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of heat-trapping gases on the globe.

The package, including an £84 million NASA research project on climate modelling, was unveiled in a written statement less than a week before Mr Bush embarks on his second European trip.

Allies of the US have criticised Mr Bush for abandoning the 1997 Kyoto treaty which would put limits on the emissions of gases that many scientists say are warming the globe.

Mr Bush has promised European allies that he would help devise an alternative to the Kyoto treaty that would ease global warming without hurting the US and other economies.
