NEWBURY - Campaigners fighting the A34 Newbury bypass won a breathing space yesterday in their battle against the Department of Transport's plans to evict them from protest camps blocking the route.

The DoT wanted a senior High Court official to grant possession orders entitling it to start evictions of two camps at the River Kennet and at Elmore Woods in Berkshire.

The Environmental group, Friends of the Earth, claims the £66 million road project will damage three sites of special scientific interest, a number of local nature reserves, two historic battle sites, an area designated to be of outstanding natural beauty, and 12 archaeological sites.
