Broadcaster and chairman of the Road Safety Authority Gay Byrne is to host a new Sunday afternoon radio show on RTÉ Lyric FM from November, the station announced yesterday.
The two-hour show, to be known as Sunday Best, will feature a mix of big band music, classic crooners, classical music, as well as a focus on what is new in the world of light jazz.
As part of the music station's autumn schedule, unveiled yesterday, broadcaster John Kelly will also host a new weekday afternoon show from the start of October called The JK Ensemble.
Mr Kelly's evening music programme Mystery Train was recently cancelled following controversial changes to RTÉ Radio 1's programming schedule.
He previously has expressed the hope that listeners to the RTÉ 1 programme Rattlebag, which has also been withdrawn from the station's autumn schedule, might follow him to Lyric FM.
According to Lyric FM, Mr Kelly's new show will play a mix of classical, jazz, world, roots, traditional and contemporary music. Mr Kelly also presents RTÉ television's arts programme The View and the music series Other Voices.
Mr Byrne said he was delighted to be returning to his "radio roots", and would be playing great music "with a little bit of chat in between".
Sunday Best will air on Sunday between 3pm and 5pm, while The JK Ensemble will be broadcast every weekday between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
