Cable & Wireless (C&W) has appointed a chairman at the second attempt after beleaguered shareholders scuppered a previous choice.
Former British Aerospace finance director Mr Richard Lapthorne will step into the role vacated by Sir Ralph Robins with immediate effect.
Mr Lapthorne announced his retirement as chairman of healthcare company Amersham yesterday.
In May, non-executive director Mr David Nash was lined up for the role, but the move was blocked by shareholders who called on the board to look for an externally recruited chairman.

The pressure from investors came after C&W detailed a £800 million overhaul of its global division in November.
