Cahoot says it is set to launch a software-only credit card next week. The Webcard scheme is designed to eliminate fraud on the web.
The software changes its unique 16-digit number every time a purchase is made.
Customers must first enter their usual security details on the cahoot website, and they will then have the option of clicking on an icon which brings up an on-screen card.
A new set of digits is generated for every new transaction, making it impossible for anyone at the receiving end to use the number fraudulently.
Transactions can be made from any website, not merely partner sites that have signed up to the scheme.
Abbey National's internet subsidiary will be the first bank in the UK to try the system, although similar services have been operating in the US for just over a year.
Cahoot it says around 60 per cent of online shoppers would spend more if security could be assured, citing in-house research.
