Liverpool 1 Man United 2
Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek became the latest goalkeeper to produce a high-profile blunder when his error presented Manchester United with the initiative to claim a 2-1 victory at Anfield today.
With the fiercely-contested match finely-balanced in the 64th-minute, Jamie Carragher sent a looping header back towards the Poland international, who had been under fire for making a number of errors in previous matches.
However, as he stooped to catch the ball he allowed it to slip through his arms and it rolled between his legs, presenting Diego Forlan with the simplest of opportunities to break the deadlock.
More questions will be asked about the Pole's effort for United's second. Forlan popped up at the edge of the box moments after getting the first to score with a right-foot drive at Dudek's near post. With Chris Kirkland waiting in the wings, Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier's powers of forgiveness is being sorely tested.
And just to highlight Dudek's role in the defeat, his opposite number Fabien Barthez pulled of a spectacular save from a thunderous 30-yard drive by Dietmar Hamman.
In a typically frenetic game, chances were few and far between and although United began to secure a more even balance of possession in the second half, a scoreless draw seemed the most likely outcome.
But having conceded two quick goals, Liverpool closed out the last 15 minutes in the ascendancy. And Sami Hyypia raised hopes with a driven shot through a packed box on 82 minutes after substitute Diouf had battled for the ball.
While Liverpool fans will frustrated by the lack of creativity the home side showed, they will remember this game more for the error, or errors, made by a goalkeeper who once seen as a saviour.
