Killarney councillors are to ask the Minister for Justice, Mr O'Donoghue, to rescind a recent decision on nightclub closing times in order to restore "sanity" to the town.
The longer opening hours of nightclubs "have proved a disaster for Killarney", a town which attracts millions of visitors each year, the monthly meeting of the urban council was told this week.
More people are on the streets later and there are "many unprovoked attacks after 3 a.m.," Cllr Donal Grady claimed.
"It is unsafe for anyone, including our garda∅, to be on the streets after 3 a.m.," he said.
The joint motion by Cllr Donal Grady and Cllr Sean O'Grady, which was passed by all nine councillors, requested the Minister to push back the closing times of nightclubs to 2 a.m.
At the moment, nightclubs in the town serve until 2.30 a.m. and close at 3 a.m.
But it is often 5.30 a.m.. before the streets are cleared at weekends.
The subject of noise and disturbance has been before the council on a number of occasions.
