Limerick councillors want the city council to resume collecting domestic rubbish because privatisation has led to a near monopoly.

Up to 3,000 homes and businesses were without a refuse collection service last month after the liquidation of Limerick Waste Recycling. The collapse of the company follows last year's closure of another private service provider in Limerick Ipodec.

It is understood that Mr Binman - the largest waste company in the mid-west - has purchased the customer database of Limerick Waste Recycling.

There is only one other company in the region - Clean Ireland - offering a similar service but this company will only collect waste in certain areas of the city.

According to some councillors privatisation has created a near monopoly and many householders have no choices in the waste-collection market.

They want Limerick City Council to provide an alternative waste-collection service. However, it is understood local authority officials believe the cost would be too prohibitive.

Cllr John Gilligan was one of the 3,000 customers left without a service. "There's no other facet of life that I know of where the State insists I have to use a particular service and they don't provide me with a choice. I'm asking the city manager to put the trucks back on the road - if private enterprise is not giving me a choice then I want Limerick City Council to give me one."
