The north Mayo coroner, Dr Mickey Loftus, has called for a reduction in blood alcohol limits and the introduction of random blood testing to reduce road deaths.
At inquests in Crossmolina yesterday, Dr Loftus said alcohol was still the major contributor to road deaths. In the last 15 years, he said, he had presided at 42 road traffic death inquests, 28, or 70 per cent of which, were alcohol-related. In most cases, three to four times the legal alcohol limit was involved.
