Fianna Fáil has called on Minister for Health James Reilly to clarify his involvement in the multimillion euro pension deal for the former chief executive of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO), George McNeice.

Party spokesman on health Billy Kelleher said yesterday Dr Reilly had been surprisingly silent on the issue, which was a cause of significant concern to IMO members.

"As a former IMO president, Dr Reilly must clarify what role he had, if any, in Mr McNeice being granted terms and conditions that would have entitled him to a pension pot of up to €25 million," Mr Kelleher added.

"This is an outrageous sum and while I welcome the fact it has been negotiated down, it is still significantly out of line with acceptable practice."'

The Irish Medical Organisation , which represents GPs, hospital consultants, non-consultant doctors and public health doctors, is to ask Dr Reilly to take part in a review into how the contract was agreed.

Dr Reilly was one of the doctors on the organisation's remuneration committee when the contract was agreed with Mr McNeice in 2003.
