A CALL to abolish the €10 air travel tax has been made following the sudden closure of Ostan na Rosann, the only hotel in Dungloe, Co Donegal.
The closure of the 48-room hotel leaves the Rosses area of Donegal with only one hotel, Caisleán Oir, a 20-room premises in Annagry close to Donegal airport.
Ostan na Rosann is part of MMC Hotels, owned by the McBride family, natives of The Rosses, based in Falkirk, Scotland.
A statement by the company said a liquidator has been appointed and that the hotel was closing immediately with the loss of up to 30 full and part-time jobs.
The owners said a “severe downturn” in the Irish and world economy forced the closure.
Local Councillor David Alcorn said Ostan was a major asset to tourism in The Rosses and called for it to be reopened as soon as possible. Paul Diver, chairman of the Donegal branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, said there was an urgent need to abolish the €10 air travel tax.
