FIANNA FÁIL’S justice spokesman Dara Calleary said he did not like “secret deals” made between Independent TDs and his party in government.

“I think any deals that are done should be be put out there in any programme for government,” he added.

“But the reality is that during the course of that 14 years of Fianna Fáil in power, there was a transformation of the State.”

Mr Calleary was commenting on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland programme yesterday on the deal with Independent TDs Jackie Healy-Rae, Kerry South, and Michael Lowry, Tipperary North, during the lifetime of the last Fianna Fáil-led government. The details of the deals were revealed on RTÉ television’s The Week in Politics on Sunday night.

Mr Calleary said that “tens of billions” were spent in every constituency during Fianna Fáil’s 14 years in government.

“We had the biggest capital programme in the history of the State,” he said.

“Regardless of whether you had an Independent TD or not, every constituency benefited from that.

“There is no area that did not benefit,” he said.
