Phnom Penh - The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mrs Mary Robinson, making her first visit to Cambodia, stressed the importance of the nation's July elections and the need to fight injustice in the country.

Mrs Robinson secured assurances from the Phnom Penh government that the UN could continue its work in the country despite government accusations that the UN Centre for Human Rights was exceeding its mandate. She said Cambodia needed to fight human rights abuses, or periods such as the Khmer Rouge's 1975-79 "killing fields" regime could be repeated.
